Chris Jericho admitted during one of his podcasts that it was Vince McMahon who convinced him to stay on past WrestleMania 33. This extension to Y2J's latest stint on the roster culminated in Jericho beating Kevin Owens for the United States Title at Payback, all before dropping it again two nights later on SmackDown.

Beating Owens with Jericho after KO had already toppled his ex-partner at 'Mania was a mistake. After losing the Universal Title to Goldberg, Owens needed a lengthy run to re-establish himself elsewhere on the card. His 28-day reign as US Champ wasn't satisfying aside from one match on the April 10 edition of Raw against Dean Ambrose.

Billed as Intercontinental Champion vs. United States Champion, this was a main event to be proud of. It wasn't especially long, going just over 12 minutes, but it displayed the chemistry Ambrose and Owens have always had together and rescued a show bogged down by a series of needlessly short matches.
