9 Match Star Ratings For AEW Double Or Nothing 2020

7. MJF Vs. Jungle Boy

Stadium Stampede
AEW

This was an exceptional pro wrestling match that highlighted how far MJF and Jungle Boy have come even since February. Clearly, both men have studied tape or reflected on the core of their characters throughout this crisis, because this was a superior sequel to what was already a damn good match in front of a hot crowd.

The dark, cruel depths of MJF's heel imagination were on show here; in a riff on both his "bad luck" injury storyline and the sad, vivid memory of Britt Baker's partial LCL tear, he clutched his own knee in agony. If ever there was a time to do this spot and not make Jungle Boy look like a moron, it was the week on which AEW was seemingly cursed. From there, MJF and Jungle Boy explored their wonderful, cracked mirror image dynamic with a series of symmetrical oneupmanship spots before MJF worked the arm and Jungle Boy roared back with a thrilling, indie-riffic comeback sequence that culminated in a frightening apron poison 'rana, which MJF sold beautifully.

Very young-guys-having-a-banger, at its best, with Jungle Boy possessing the intelligence but not the strength to catch MJF in a crossface, this was an Americanised echo of the richly textured 2013 Hiroshi Tanahashi Vs. Kazuchika Okada matches.

Jungle Boy staked his claim as the new Tanahashi throughout; this was a very nuanced and matured performance, in which he lost nothing in defeat.

Star Rating: ★★★★¼
