9 Most Unintentionally Hilarious "Scary" Wrestler Gimmicks
8. Zeus
Tiny Lister is an imposing dude. He had a look that was custom built for wrestling, what with the six tons of neck muscles and that menacing lazy eye. Unfortunately, he was completely wasted as the meta-wrestler Zeus. Here's how the concept of Zeus came to be involved with the WWE; Hulk Hogan starred in the box-office flop No Holds Barred as wrestler Rip Thomas, who decides to wrestle Zeus in a - you guessed it - no holds barred match (!) to get revenge for his brother, whom Zeus had earlier put in the hospital. In order to capitalize on the non-success of the movie, and presumably because Vince McMahon refuses to admit defeat, ever, he brought the Zeus character into "the real world" to challenge Hulk Hogan in WWE. How did they get the feud going? Simple. Zeus was upset about being billed under Hogan in the promotional materials and having to lose to him on camera. So...yeah, the character of Zeus wanted to wrestle the "real" Hulk Hogan because he fake lost to his fake character in a movie. Look at all the sense that makes. The set-up was quite possibly the dumbest, least effective way to break kayfabe in the 80s. Luckily for the company, no one seemed to notice all the confusing stumbles through the fourth wall.
