9 Promos That Killed Wrestlers' Careers
8. Alex Wright's Debut As Berlyn Does Not Go Well
Alex Wright was a quality mid-carder for WCW who got himself over with crowds with his dopey dance moves. His on-again, off-again feud/partnership with Disco Inferno remains one of the best examples of WCW finding success with talent outside the nWo and main event picture.
But as was common during the spiraling last years of the company, Wright got a useless makeover in 1999. Decked out in all-black, he now went by the name Berlyn, an arrogant German who refused to speak English, instead opting to communicate through an interpreter.
That last part made for one of the most awkward and jumbled debut promos of all time. Mean Gene Okerlund would ask Berlyn a general question, Berlyn would respond in German, and then a woman with the mic skills of an unripened banana would translate. It did not make for compelling television.
The crowd practically booed him out of the building -- and not in a "we love to hate you" sort of way -- making the character dead on arrival.
Wright dropped the gimmick shortly thereafter and returned to his happy dancing ways alongside Disco Inferno in 2000, but the mojo was pretty much gone. After a brief tag title reign, Wright got shuffled around the card until the company was bought out by WWE in 2001.
Unsurprisingly, his contract was not picked up.
