As a response to their competitor WCW, Vince McMahon and the WWF began promoting more pay-per-views in 1995. The Ted Turner-owned organisation had upped their PPV quota to nine that year and, not wanting to be outdone, Vince set about producing more monthly specials himself, in the form of the two-hour 'In Your House' shows.

The first In Your House pay-per-view took place in May '95, and the 28th and final IYH extravaganza was the 1999 edition of Backlash. Following that event, the WWF decided to abandon the 'House' banner and gave pay-per-views their own individual names.

Backlash 1999 (or Backlash: In Your House to give it its full name) was also the last pay-per-view appearance of Owen Hart, who died during a freak accident at the following month's Over the Edge (Owen teamed with Jeff Jarrett in a losing effort to the New Age Outlaws in a WWF Tag Team Championship match).

Here we are in 2021, of course, with Backlash now having been rebranded as WrestleMania Backlash.
