Many fans today bemoan the PG rating and the lack of blood on WWE programming, wishing that the company would revert to TV-14 and allow their performers to sport the old proverbial 'crimson mask', much like has been seen in AEW since Tony Khan's promotion arrived on the scene. Before the May 2008 switch, WWE wrestlers frequently bled, and for a lot of fans this only added to the drama.

But that blood was not always welcomed by all, with the Kentucky Boxing and Wrestling Authority particularly annoyed by the presence of claret at Backlash 2006. At the show, both Shawn Michaels and Triple H did deep blade jobs, despite the state prohibiting it under their laws.

WWE was warned not to use blood prior to the show and the company even appealed to the commission asking for special allowance but they were denied. WWE went ahead and did it anyway, because nobody but nobody tells Vince McMahon what to do, goddammit!

As a result, WWE was levied with a series of fines and given a two-year probationary period. WWE has returned for TV tapings and live events since, but they haven't ran a pay-per-view there since Backlash 2006, which has potentially cost the state millions.
