With another WrestleMania rolling around, naturally this meant that another snub would shortly be heading Punk's way.
Despite being the WWE Champion at the time, he was shunned from the show’s main event, with John Cena and the Rock taking that spot instead. Granted, it’s difficult to argue that Cena vs. Rock wasn’t a rivalry worthy of the final spot on the card, but to the traditionalist in Punk, the champion always goes on last.
Obviously the bookers had other ideas, but Punk nonetheless put in a main event-worthy performance as he and Chris Jericho went 22 minutes in an excellent bout for the company’s top title.
Undertaker vs. Triple H may have once again been the better contest in terms of the story that was told, but for the wrestling purists Punk was once again in, arguably, the match of the night. Not only that, but this proved to be a vital chapter in the epic 434-day reign that Punk would eventually put together as WWE Champion.
As far as responses to being overlooked for another ‘Mania main event go, this was a pretty emphatic retort.
