After solidifying his status as a bonafide main eventer, it seemed like all that was left to do was strap a rocket to Punk once he made his return after Money in the Bank and bask in the resultant success.
But surprise, surprise, it wasn’t quite as straightforward as that.
Punk would indeed make a triumphant return to in-ring action at SummerSlam 2011, defeating John Cena in the main event to become the Undisputed WWE Champion. What followed though, was nothing short of bizarre.
Kevin Nash emerged from nowhere, hit Punk with a powerbomb, paving the way for Alberto Del Rio to cash-in his Money in the Bank briefcase and steal the title for himself. This then led to a drawn-out, and largely unnecessary, angle with Triple H, which eventually saw Punk taste defeat at Night of Champions and thus lose a great slice of his momentum.
As debatable as all of that booking was though, Punk would naturally bounce back and by Survivor Series 2011 he was back in the main event picture. There, he defeated Del Rio to reclaim the WWE Championship, to kick start a reign that would last quite some time…
