9 Times Triple H Stole The Spotlight

At SummerSlam 2002, Brock Lesnar became the WWE Undisputed Champion, going on to hold the belt for 84 days. However, his reign was really only “undisputed” for eight of those days, because on the 2 September showing of Raw, General Manager Eric Bischoff created another world title—the World Heavyweight Championship.

And who was deemed the choicest candidate to take ownership of that belt? Not The Undertaker, who Stephanie McMahon had been touting as the number one contender, not the winner of a multi-man tournament or anything quite as fair as that, but Triple H, for the simple reason that Bischoff said he was the world champion Raw “deserved.”

Admittedly, Triple H probably was the best option to become Raw’s world champion, but to hand him the belt—literally, in a briefcase—just diminished the impact of what should’ve been a major moment.

If he’d won the belt following an actual match or series of matches, it would’ve been easier to swallow. Instead, though, it felt like confirmation that Raw was simply becoming the “Triple H show”.

Five world title reigns over the next two-and-a-half years did little to dispel that feeling.
