9 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (Oct 21)
1. I Quit
Airing the furious, red-faced promo Eddie Kingston cut on Jon Moxley after last week's Dynamite was a wise move that would have probably sufficed as the night's sole World Title feud development. Instead, we got two outstanding interviews from the men who'll meet in an I Quit match on 7 November.
Moxley went first. He said that while he used to love Kingston for his honesty, loyalty, and integrity, he'd turned bitter, angry, and whiny. He wasn't going to apologise for his success. Spending thousands of days on the road running his body into the ground to feed his family justified this, and at Full Gear, Moxley was either going to get his friend back, or end him.
Kingston's words were similarly pointed and his words impassioned. He had laughed himself to the point of tears to open, saying that everything Jon had said about him was true. He had become angry, bitter, and a snake, and he hates who he has become, but the end justifies the means. When King wasn't playing the game, he was nothing. Now, he's fighting for a World Title.
Delivery and tone are always going to trump transcription with promos like these. This rivalry feels bitter, real, and layered. That it's informed by so much history is as big a reason why for it's so easy to buy into as the skill of the performers themselves. Really, we're looking at two modern greats cutting promos on each other every single week here, and we should enjoy it while it lasts.
