9 Wrestlers Who Could Have Been WWE Champion In The 1990s
5. Ahmed Johnson
Ahmed Johnson is one of those guys who just couldn't get things to work.
Arriving in late 1995 as a pet project of Cowboy Bill Watts, Johnson quickly won over audiences with his...unique presence. Oh sure, his promos were incomprehensible, and his matches were sloppy at best, but hey, what's over is over, and in 1996, Ahmed was very much over. With his impressive physique and popularity with the fans, it's no wonder that at his height, he was pencilled in as a possible contender and/or champion for the company.
However, beginning in mid-1996, Johnson would suffer a litany of injuries and illnesses that would take him out of action for months at a time. Over the course of the following year, he lost his popularity and support from the company. By the time 1998, he was just another guy on the roster, and he was gone before WrestleMania XIV, missing the entirety of the Attitude Era.
It's impossible to say if Ahmed would have even worked as a WWF Champion. However, based on his crowd reactions in 1996, it's undeniable people would have accepted it - if he was able to stay healthy.
