9 Wrestlers Who Refused To Lose
2. Bret Hart (Survivor Series 1997)
Again, this is another story that has been revisited and revised time after time after time, with thousands of words, shoot interviews and documentaries dedicated to looking at every possible facet of the so-called 'Montreal Screwjob'. At the 1997 Survivor Series, Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels, referee Earl Hebner and a few others conspired to 'screw' Bret Hart out of his WWE Title.
Bret and Shawn had been engaged in a bitter personal up to that point and The Hitman refused to drop the WWE Title to The Showstopper at the pay-per-view, citing the fact that HBK wouldn't do the same for him and it was taking place in Canada, where Bret was considered something of a hero. And Bret had the right to say 'no', too, since he had a 'reasonable creative control' clause written into his contract to stop Vince and the writers from assassinating his character when he was on the way out.
Bret, to his credit, agreed to drop the title to anyone except Michaels and on any event bar Survivor Series, but WWE were paranoid since he was on his way to their fierce competition, WCW (only after his contract had expired proper, however).
After Triple H suggested that if Bret didn't want to 'do business' that the company 'do business for him', the Montreal Screwjob began to formulate. In his last proper WWE match, Hebner called for the bell while Michaels had him locked in the Sharpshooter as Vince stood and looked on from ringside. It will live on as one of the most infamous moments in wrestling history, and it all stemmed from one man steadfastly refusing to lose.
