9 Wrestlers With Seriously Complex Backstories

6. Abyss

Abyss debuted in TNA Wrestling way back in 2003. There was initially a great deal of mystery surrounding the gargantuan masked competitor. Unfortunately, few specifics of Abyss€™ history have been revealed over time. Generally speaking -- much like Mankind and Kane before him -- Abyss is a highly aggressive, deranged, and violent individual. He likes to dish out pain and make his opponents suffer. Also, similarly to Kane, the Monster Abyss did not speak upon his debut. He was teamed with James Mitchell who did all of the talking for him. Together, the pairing of Abyss and Mitchell were a demonic and diabolical duo. In 2007, Abyss finally spoke for the first time. In 2004, a signature match was created for Abyss, dubbed the Monster€™s Ball. Essentially, it was an anything goes, falls count anywhere, hardcore match. Frequently, the match featured four participants doing battle throughout the arena. The use of weapons is encouraged, and Abyss even has a favorite named Janice -- a 2x4 covered with nails. Initially, the gimmick match included locking all of the competitors inside a room without food, water, or light for 24 hours. Supposedly, the wrestlers would stay in these rooms -- their aggression building -- until just prior to the match. Abyss later received therapy from Dr. Stevie for a short period of time. Dr. Stevie tried to get Abyss to overcome his so-called addiction to violence. However, the treatment was unsuccessful and the two became involved in a feud. Most recently, Abyss took a long sabbatical and his supposed brother, Joseph Park, joined the TNA roster. Park was a lawyer and claimed to be looking for his brother Abyss, who had disappeared. Abyss only made sporadic appearances during this two-year stint. However, earlier this year it was officially revealed that Joseph Park and Abyss are the same person. Since then, Abyss has returned to his extremely violent ways, however, he now frequently appears without his signature mask.
