Debuting on the April 5th, 2004 edition of Monday Night Raw, Eugene was a controversial figure from the word go. He was the announced as the nephew of Raws General Manager, Eric Bischoff. However, Eugene was portrayed as being easily excitable and somewhat slow. Eugene was assigned to be under the watchful eye of William Regal, who was Bischoffs assistant. Almost immediately, he began a feud with Jonathan Coachman before moving on to a monumental rivalry with Triple H. When it came to both promos and in-ring action, Eugene had a tendency to impersonate his favorite superstars -- whether it be the Rock, Stone Cold, or Hulk Hogan. While Eugenes gimmick was more controversial than complicated, its polarizing nature made it all the more complex. WWE had created a controversial character and was attempting to skirt some major issues. Even though Eugene was never explicitly stated to have any sort of mental disability, it was obvious to all who watched what was intended. Despite this, Eugene became a somewhat popular figure for a period of time. To the surprise of many, Eugene never attempted any sort of heel turn by revealing it all to be a hoax or cold-hearted gag. Instead, the character became one of the few to never undergo any major changes, continuing to stay as is.
