1. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton Benjamin is one of the biggest examples of a guy that didn't live up to his unbelievable potential. Originally signed as a favour to Brock Lesnar (Benjamin coached Lesnar in college), Benjamin proved that he was well worth the investment in no time, wowing everyone in OVW with his awe-inspiring natural athleticism. Indeed, it quickly became apparent to anyone with eyes that Benjamin was special in his own right, and that they might have actually acquired two stars by acquiescing to Lesnar. Benjamin was moved up to the main roster in early 2003, where he was a member of Team Angle (alongside Kurt Angle and Charlie Haas). Those are three no-nonsense wrestlers, right there. Angle (whose in-ring involvement was limited due to his serious neck issues) did the talking while Benjamin and Haas did most of the heavy lifting wrestling-wise. When the duo branched out on their own, they didn't do many promos, instead choosing to do their talking in the ring. That was the right approach, since Benjamin and Haas weren't anything special on the mic. Things intermittently looked promising for Benjamin when he became a singles star, but his verbal weakness was telling. WWE did try to give him a manager, but it was an offensive stereotype (his 'Momma') that did more harm than good (it was supposedly a bit of a punishment after he insulted a well-respected road agent). With the right manager, somebody who could do his talking and put him over as the star he ought to have been, Benjamin could have actually broken through the glass ceiling and into the World Title picture. Without one, he was destined to remain in the IC/US Title zone.
