Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has long been a slave to the reactions of the WWE universe. He's turned from face to heel and back again several times during his career due to the ever-changing reception he receives from the live crowd. The Rock is generally regarded as one of the biggest babyfaces and most popular WWE stars ever, but that hasn't always been the case.

When The Rock debuted in WWE as the ultra-bland, completely nondescript white meat babyface Rocky Maivia, it was clear that it wasn't a role that was going to lead to any real success. In the early 80s, he would have been an instant megastar, but the business had changed.

Indeed, it wasn't long before the fans turned on the anachronistic Maivia, bombarding him and his matches with chants of 'Rocky Sucks' and 'Die, Rocky, Die'. A bit harsh, maybe, but it led to Rock completely reinventing himself as the cocky leader of the Nation of Domination.

Rock would become a babyface not too long after. It was just impossible to boo the guy, given how incredibly entertaining he was. A babyface between 1999 and 2003, he became bad guy Hollywood Rock when the fans started booing him, owing to his recent trips to Tinseltown.

A riot as Hollywood Rock, The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment was receiving genuine heat in his disputes with Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin and, erm, The Hurricane. Of course, since 2004 he has been a de facto babyface, even if some members of the WWE locker room see him as a bad guy.
