AEW Favourite Forced To Vacate Top Title

This major AEW favourite has been forced to vacate one of the top titles in the game.

El Hijo del Vikingo
AEW/AAA

Having suffered a knee injury last month, El Hijo del Vikingo has now been forced to vacate the AAA Mega Championship.

This brings an end to Vikingo's reign at 833 days, making him easily the longest-reigning champion in the AAA Mega Title's 17-year history. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time the AAA Mega Championship has been vacated due to injury, with El Hijo del Vikingo himself winning that prize in a five-way match at Triplemanía Regia II in December 2021 after Kenny Omega had to vacate the title through injury.

As per Google Translate, that X post reads:

The injury to El Hijo del Vikingo happened during a Rancor Extremo contest pitting Vikingo, Psycho Clown, and Wotan up against Trauma I, Fresero Jr., and Demonio Infernal. That match had to be stopped with El Hijo del Vikingo landed awkwardly and was helped to the back.

At the time, it was reported that this injury "may be a serious one", and the 26-year-old high-flyer has since undergone surgery. It remains to be seen how long he'll be out of action for, but here's wishing the best to Vikingo on his road to recovery.

A new AAA Mega Champion will be crowned at Triplemanía XXXII on Saturday 27 April.
