Beyond The Mat - What Happened Next?
6. Dennis Stamp
Dennis Stamp first came to Barry Blaustein's attention when the director asked Terry Funk for a wrestler who'd never made it. Stamp's over-sensitive nature mixed with his dogged perseverance, sometimes to the point of delusion, would make him a cult figure after the documentary's release.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Stamp wrestled extensively throughout the territories, particularly in the AWA, WWA, and NWA. He would also hold several belts during this time including winning tag titles with Tiger Jeet Singh, Al Perez, and The Missing Link. His later career would see him working as a jobber, occasionally in the WWE but more often in the twilight of the AWA putting over established stars like Superfly Jimmy Snuka and Jerry Lawler.
During the filming of 'Beyond the Mat', Stamp was working full-time as a pest exterminator. He endeared himself to many with his scenes, bouncing on a trampoline to stay fit and patiently waiting for a phone call to wrestle again though his last match had been many years before.
Already well past retirement age by this point in his life, Stamp would nevertheless wrestle one more time in 2015, tagging with Grado and Dick Justice for AIW in Cleveland, Ohio. He published a book of short stories about his life entitled 'Stamp Collection' before sadly passing away in March 2017. Ted DiBiase and Tommy Dreamer paid tribute to him on social media.
