Barry Blaustein finds Jake 'the Snake' Roberts in dire straights in Beyond The Mat. Addicted to drugs, estranged from the WWE and struggling to maintain his career, Roberts concerns and shocks the viewer both in his inability to have a relationship with his daughter and his continual confessions to the camera about his difficult upbringing and troubled mindset.

Unfortunately, his problems would get worse before they got better. He moved to the UK, wrestling for independents and putting on his own shows with mixed results. He was often inebriated during his appearances at this time. While living in England, Roberts was accused of starving his snake, Damien, to death and ended up being called to appear at St Albans Magistrates' Court.

He would return to the States shortly after, wrestling for tens of different promotions throughout the 2000s. His health and ability much deteriorated, Roberts was barely functioning when Diamond Dallas Page reached out to him in 2012. DDP moved Roberts into his home and rehabbed him mentally and physically through clean living, positive reinforcement, and a course of DDP yoga. The results are documented in The Resurrection of Jake the Snake, a feature length film released in 2015.

Thanks to DDP's life-saving intervention, Jake would reappear on WWE television and enter the Hall of Fame as reward to his remarkable comeback and new-found sobriety.
