Bret Hart's 10 Best Matches Ever
1. Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (WrestleMania 13)
It topped the list I wrote on Austin, and it tops Hart's list as well. Critics shower it only with the highest praise, from Dave Meltzer (another five-star score) to Jim Cornette (his favorite WWE match ever), to others with varying tastes and preferences. Probably the greatest WrestleMania match ever, and possibly the best match in WWE history.
Hart and Austin completed a historic double-turn at the conclusion of a blood-laden, hate-filled submission match, spelling out each man's forthcoming alignment through actions and mannerisms. It was Hart's idea for Austin to blade, even though it was against WWE rules at the time. Good call, because it's hard to imagine Austin's valiant fight to break the Sharpshooter without that spillage.
Nothing about the match felt the slightest bit contrived - it was two men with a deep-seated grudge trying to beat each other into quitting, mixing approximate weaponry with their own technical skills. The desperation and determination in the air assured it classic status, even before Austin's collapse into dreamland. Austin was a made man in the end, and Hart notched his already-staggering legacy with his finest work ever.
