Casting The Roddy Piper Film

6. Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine - Rich Sommer

The rivalry between 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine is just about as legendary as it gets, an iconic feud that culminated in objectively the greatest dog collar match in the history of dog collar matches. The feud lasted two years, with the good friends perfecting their battles and improving their game between the ropes as a result. When you think of Roddy Piper rivalries, Greg Valentine is at the top of the list.

Casting 'The Hammer' isn't the easiest thing in the world. In classic Hammer style, it isn't a starring role but it needs to be taken seriously. Valentine was an old fashioned professional wrestler, one built like a tank made out of beef and with a no-nonsense face that oozed toughness. You won't find many blokes that fit that bill sending headshots to studios.

Still, Rich Sommer kinda looks like Greg Valentine, right? It remains to be seen whether the Mad Men star could get in the sort of shape that Valentine was and an even bigger question whether he can reproduce the tough guy vibe, but that face is half the battle.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
