For even more evidence that CM Punk's first reign as World Heavyweight Championship was a colossal failure, look no farther than his mini-feud with Batista. Batista claimed contender-ship to the gold after being screwed out of winning it at Night of Champions in June 2008, setting the stage for his title match against CM Punk at The Great American Bash. The feud going into the event was completely one-sided in favor of Batista. Not only that, but they were more focused on the controversy surrounding Kane at the time than the prestigious prize which made their match meaningless before it even began. While the match wasn't atrocious, fans had very little reason to care. Batista wasn't exactly in favor of the fans and Punk was failing to get over as champion. Punk scored more offense than expected over Batista, but that didn't change the fact that this was a complete mismatch. Before a definitive victor could be named, Kane interfered, laying waste to both competitors and causing the contest to end in a double disqualification even though Batista as clearly attacked first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SF9u59fIf1U Never should a World Heavyweight Championship match on pay-per-view end without a winner. It's a total cop-out finish and the definition of lazy booking. Their Raw rematch the next night unsurprisingly ended in similar fashion. What's worse is that these two could have one heck of a match if given enough time and storyline support.
