Cody Rhodes: 10 Legacy Moments In AEW
7. No More Title Matches
Stipulations in wrestling rarely ever hold up. Much like retirements they are quickly forgotten about and brushed aside by management and talent, yet this one stood up to the day that Cody left AEW.
Rhodes challenged the first AEW Champion, Chris Jericho at Full Gear 2019 and put everything on the line going into the match, saying he’d never challenge for the title again if he lost. Whenever a challenge like this is laid down, the winner can normally be telegraphed - unless said talent is leaving for pastures new. This time, however, the tables were turned on the smart predictors.
Cody lost the match - due to some interference from MJF - and with it, his chances of challenging for the AEW again title disappeared. Most fans felt that this would be overturned quickly as Rhodes was always positioned as one of the top stars in AEW, yet it was never the case. Cody didn’t challenge for the title ever again. Despite stating that Tony Khan could reverse the decision, he didn’t want that scenario to play out, and it never did.
