Just when you thought it was possible to earn respect in a wrestling ring, Seth Rollins went and showed that respect is a four-letter word.

Cody Rhodes gutted out an incredible Hell in a Cell match Sunday night with torn pectoral, giving fans an instantly iconic image when removing his jacket. The match exceeded all expectations and only endeared Rhodes to the fans even more. So when Cody came out Monday night to discuss the aftermath, fans were reverent.

Rhodes actually brought up Money in the Bank, as if he would have a shot at competing in four weeks, but then Seth Rollins came out and said Cody had earned his respect. He shook his hand and left.

But then, as Cody walked up the ramp, Rollins came charging out of the back and blindsided Rhodes with a sledgehammer, putting the American Nightmare down. He continued to attack briefly as referees and officials flailed around, afraid to try to stop a maniac with a weapon.

Rhodes refused to be stretchered out, and as Corey Graves noted, Cody is scheduled to have surgery to repair the torn pec on Wednesday. Recovery times vary, as John Cena famously returned after four months, while others have taken six months to get back in the ring.

The Rollins attack drew huge heel heat, so it'll be interesting to see how WWE tries to capitalize on it going forward. If he's just coming out and cackling next week, you'll know they had no real plan for this when it happened.
