During Bryan's stint on NXT, Michael Cole was simultaneously transitioning into the role of 'heel announcer', which basically meant he became increasingly insufferable to listen to and constantly argued with whoever was unlucky enough to be sitting beside him at the commentary booth.

One of Cole's main targets during this period was Daniel Bryan, who he constantly put down and made fun of at every given opportunity. Cole would call him a loser, a tool, a nerd; he would demand that he go back to the 'minor leagues' (the independents) and would continually point out Bryan's perceived lack of charisma.

Bryan is candid on the Blu-ray about how he feels this isn't the right way to build new stars. WWE have argued that this angle helped Bryan as it developed an underdog character, but he isn't so sure.

He believes that WWE was only looking for one specific type of 'charisma'; the obvious kind that the likes of The Rock display. But Bryan, rightly, insists that there are different ways to be charismatic, and his particular brand ended up shining through, in spite of what WWE thought of him.
