Davey Richards Interview: Joining MLW, Opera Cup, Returning To Wrestling & More

Looking at this loaded card for Fightland, how hyped are you to be a part of it?

Richards: It's a great time to be... I'm a wrestler, but I'm also a fan. I really hope me and Tom are on first because I really want to sit back and watch the rest of the show. Yeah, what a show. This is like WrestleMania-type stuff here. I'm very excited to be a part of it and participate in the tournament and compete against eight of the best besides myself. That heavyweight title match. Like, holy crap, man. It has that big fight feel and that's organic. You can't create it. It has to be organic and it is, so this is going to be awesome.

Your opponent in the opening round of the Opera Cup at Fightland is Tom Lawlor, who won last year's Opera Cup. Your thoughts on facing such tough opposition right out of the gate?

Richards: Yeah, Court's not looking to give me an easy time here in MLW, but I like that. I come here for the competition. I'm getting what I asked for and I'm looking forward to it.

Was it weird at all stepping back into a ring for the first time in four years, and why was 2021 the right time for you to return to wrestling?

Richards: My first match back, I went 30 minutes because I didn't know what I could do and what I couldn't. I've been wrestling since I was 10. It was the only thing I was ever really good at. I tried other sports, but it didn't work out. I stepped away to concentrate on other things: school, being a paramedic, being a fireman, and most of all being a dad. Some things happened that really opened my eyes to make me realize it was time to go back to what I was put on earth to do and that's wrestle.
