War Games was a special attraction match that the NWA and later WCW became synonymous with. While the WWF has the Royal Rumble (Invented by Pat Patterson) as its special match, War Games was WCW’s (and is probably the reason why the modern day WWE has never held a War Games match, with the Elimination Chamber being the closest thing to it). It was the ultimate feud settler and the way to wrap up a long-running heated storyline. Suffice to say, most War Games were played out in front of a rabid crowd. Like a lot of NWA feature matches, blood was a frequent feature of these most physical of matches.

Fought between two teams of either four or five wrestlers, it took place in two wrestling rings, surrounded by a steel cage with a roof. Once in, there was no escape. One wrestler from each team started and then a coin toss determined which team got to send in a new wrestler on the five minute mark (this was invariably won by the heels). Every two minutes, a new wrestler would join the fray until all the competitors were locked inside the cage. There was no pinfalls, no disqualifications and the only way to win was “submit or surrender”. The War Games matches of The Great American Bash 1987, Wrestle War 1991 and 1992 are worth going out of your way to watch as examples of this brutal spectacular.
