6. 12 Rounds (2009)

12 Rounds is basically Die Hard with John Cena, unashamedly knocking off the classic in a way hundreds of others have, but with a higher level of competence thanks to Die Hard 2's Renny Harlin directing it. It also benefits from Aidan Gillen appearing as a villain, two years before he reinvented his image as Littlefinger on Game Of Thrones.

The plot was never going to be rewarded by any writing awards, as it's shamelessly silly - Cena is forced to go through 12 rounds of challenges to save his girlfriend from the nefarious Gillen. It's sort of like Die Hard 3 meets the trials of Theseus or Jason and the Argonauts.

Gillen is the stand-out, but Cena proves an admirable, charismatic lead, and this is by far his best action movie, even if it isn't exactly challenging.
