The Undisputed WWE title should be far more ugly and artless than it is. The promotion opted for the laziest route imaginable.

The original design was lazy, too. In 2013, WWE debuted a new version of its most famous championship. Embodying how much the marketing had overwhelmed everything, WWE simply whacked its huge logo on the strap and called it the main plate. The “jewels” within the logo looked nice enough, but the on-the-nose design was very much emblematic of the creative direction WWE settled on throughout the decade. It was relentlessly obvious.

The updated version worn currently by Cody Rhodes shouldn’t work either. It’s the 2013 version, more or less, just blasted with gold. It is a transparent and tasteless attempt at prestige, but, for whatever reason, it looks fetching. Perhaps that results from its two holders, Roman Reigns and Cody, and their positioning as the #1 heel and babyface, respectively, of the century.

It’s often said that the man makes the title; could it be that the man also makes the design?

Or is it simply so over-the-top that it works?
