Whilst the influence and importance of the Montreal Screwjob can't really be overstated, WWE still seems to think that wrestling fans are interested in it being dredged up from the past over and over again. By the time Bret Hart returned to the WWE and was able to get something approaching revenge on Vince McMahon, so much water had gone under the bridge that the WrestleMania XXVI match between the two somehow managed to make Vince sympathetic.

Just think about that for a second. WWE managed to create a situation where the audience felt sorry for Vince McMahon, the man who had screwed Bret Hart in the most unethical of ways in Bret's home country. Bret took his revenge in a one-sided 11-minute annihilation of Vince, yet portions of the fanbase began actively rooting for Vince to make a comeback.

Bret's (legal and physical) inability to take a bump meant the match was always going to be a struggle, but there must have been better ways of going about it than the way they chose. On paper the match between Bret Hart and Vince McMahon at WrestleMania XXVI worked fine, but in practice it was dull, boring and pointless.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
