When Shane McMahon returned to WWE in 2016, after a long absence, fans were overjoyed - but by the time it became clear he was going to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32, that joy had morphed into confusion. Why was Shane going to fight The Undertaker? Why was Vince seemingly in control of 'Taker? What in the blue hell was going on?

Those questions were never satisfyingly answered - but the match went ahead regardless. It is a fairly depressing indictment of WrestleMania 32 that the bout was one of the most highly anticipated, but in truth it was never going to amount to more than a plodding brawl with presumably one major spot from Shane.

That spot was an incredible thing of course, as Shane dove off the top of Hell in a Cell only to miss a Leap of Faith elbow and go crashing through an announce table. But one spot does not a good match make, and the rest of the bout was mediocre at best.

Undertaker was at the point in his career where he needed an energetic and talented worker opposite him in order to put on a great match. Shane McMahon is a committed and brave performer, but energetic and talented he is not. This was a match that failed to meet admittedly low expectations.
