31. Shinsuke Nakamura Vs. Bobby Roode – Takeover: San Antonio

For such an electric lead up to winning the thing, Nakamura had a majorly disappointing NXT Title run.

In what was billed "The biggest money match in NXT history", Roode and Nakamura were treated as one of the biggest dream matches since Rock Vs. Hogan. Yet, it didn’t deliver what was promised.

The match was adequate, nonetheless but seemed to belong on an NXT TV supercard event more than an actual Takeover. The pair played it fairly safe with a cocky heel having his arrogance get the best of him schtick for a majority of the match until the Nakamura knee injury trope was reused from Takeover: Toronto Vs. Samoa Joe. While the injury was played into much heavier than Toronto, the result was still the same in slowing down the match completely. Doing the whole doctor stoppage thing never gets over well with NXT crowds and it didn’t do the match any favours here.

In the process, Nakamura was wrongly humanised and just like his match with Joe, nobody was happy to see Nakamura’s reign end even shorter than last time, no matter how over Roode was at that point.
