30. Bobby Roode Vs. Drew McIntyre – Takeover: Brooklyn III

NXT TakeOver Brooklyn IV Tommaso Ciampa Johnny Gargano
WWE

Drew McIntyre’s return to WWE in 2017 was a great story that all wrestling fans could get behind. So it wasn’t a surprise that NXT hot shot him into the title scene just over 4 months after his return. The pairing of McIntyre and Roode didn’t scream Match of The Year, but it didn’t need to. The match was never going to be, and good on WWE for not falsely hyping it up to be, which they do ever so often.

Roode was on the way out and all he needed to do was put on a match that was fitting of setting up McIntyre as the next dominant force of the black and gold brand. This one did its job fairly well. It was an old school style pure wrestling match, with a heel who was too arrogant to realise his title was slipping away and a face who brought a huge amount of fire, completing his redemption arc. It built to a nice finish with a thundering Claymore Kick and an eruption from the Brooklyn crowd.

The post-match debut of Undisputed Era only enhanced the excitement of Brooklyn III’s closure. It was an adequate way to pass the torch to a new generation of NXT talent.
