Every WCW Halloween Havoc Ranked Worst To Best
4. 1989
Subtitled Settling the Score, this was the first Halloween Havoc event and went down towards the end of an excellent year for the NWA/WCW, though the wheels had largely come off by Starrcade a month-and-a-half later.
Still, this is a good, solid wrestling show. While the undercard is largely unspectacular, things pick up considerable as Brian Pillman and Lex Luger contest the United States Title, with the latter in the midst of one of his career's best years. Bouts like this are a reminder of how good the big man was as the '80s rolled to a close. Elsewhere, the Road Warriors vs. Skyscrapers is worth checking out if you're into big beefy boys beefing the beef out of each other.
Halloween Havoc 1989's real highlight, however, is the original ThunderDome. Pitting Ric Flair and Sting against Terry Funk and The Great Muta, it featured more electricity than the myriad Zoom call screens inside the Amway Center at the moment, as parts of the cage were charged up. The stipulation was well-implemented, with Muta getting zapped after scaling the structure alongside Sting, and the whole deal was an effective way to conclude the epic Flair/Funk rivalry. It doesn't quite as strong as the best WarGames matches, but ThunderDome is still a hoot.
Also, Bruno Sammartino was the special guest referee. That's weird.
