The very first ladder match in World Championship Wrestling, this match took place a whole five years before Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels brought the concept match into existence in the World Wrestling Federation. It would also be another 10 years before WCW put on a ladder match. 1987 was the year, the Great American Bash the event, as Dusty Rhodes battled WCW Television Champion Tully Blanchard.

The TV title wasn't on the line however. The duo were fighting in a Barbed Wire Ladder Match with $100,000 hanging above the ring. Only grainy video footage of the match exists on Daily Motion, and truth be told you aren't missing much if you decide not to watch it. The ring ropes are wrapped in barbed wire, which is generally a sure-fire sign of a math being somewhat messy.

Messy is an understatement, as the duo work within the limits of the gimmick in front of an excited crowd in North Carolina. As far as firsts go, this is pretty underwhelming.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
