Every WWE 5 Star Match Ranked
3. Andrade "Cien" Almas Vs. Johnny Gargano (NXT Takeover: Philadelphia)
Hey, don't look at me like that. This is not recency bias talking... okay, maybe just a little, but can you blame me? How often does WWE deliver in-ring masterworks such as what we saw last Saturday between Johnny Gargano and Andrade Almas? Not since Sami Zayn's classics with Neville and Shinsuke Nakamura or The Revival's various tag clinics had NXT witnessed such perfection, and even then, these two gentlemen surpassed all of them.
What makes this match stand out from all the others on this list is how gimmick-free it is. There wasn't a heated story going in, as Almas wasn't Gargano's primary focus, and there were no gimmicks or props to add to the spectacle. This was just a pure, dynamite professional wrestling match that from beginning to end showed just how good both these men are. Johnny Gargano is arguably the best babyface in all of wrestling right now, and he delivered yet another amazing performance full of athletic prowess and pure sympathy-generating workmanship.
And of course, once all the dust settled, the evening capped off with the incredible angle of Tomasso Ciampa's return, beating down on the defeated Gargano. Although the story is sure to have an incredible climax, it may have already been upstaged by Act II.
