1997 may arguably be the best year for wrestling in WWE history. Sure, the average match quality isn't a fraction of what it is in 2018, but like 1994, 1997 had the distinction of having two different 5 star matches. What's incredible is how different both are, and yet, they each played their role in defining the approaching Attitude era.

At Badd Blood, Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker continued their violent feud in the first ever Hell in a Cell match. While 'Taker's contest with Mankind less than a year later is the more iconic cell match, it was this inaugural match that continues to stand the test of time as the best. For their part, 'Taker and Michaels play their roles perfectly, with the Deadman relentlessly stalking and brutalizing his hated foe, and Michaels doing everything in his power to escape his imprisonment. Even before the climax, it was clear fans were watching something special.

But then, of course, history was made, as before 'Taker was about to put away HBK, the lights dimmed, the music hit, and out arrived Kane, who quickly dispatched of 'Taker and gave Michaels the win. It is without a doubt the greatest debut in WWE history, and it helped cement this match's 5 star status.
