The mighty fell real quick and real fast in this main event. The 'mighty' in question was of course the impressive run of excellent pay per views WWE had been pulling out the bag up until this point. Backlash 2001 was the first bad one in a long time.

Whatever the occasion, a tag team main event involving four competitors who were never known for their tag team credentials (Austin's WCW years aside) was a hard sell. Kane, Undertaker, Stone Cold and Triple H were four of the best workers in the business, so at least we got some good wrestling. In terms of narrative however, it was a car crash.

Austin sucked as a heel. By affiliation, his new best bud, Triple H had lost his edge in pairing up with him. In spite of this, they left the arena with the WWE title, the IC title, and the f**king tag team titles.

Seeing Austin and Triple H hold two belts apiece, whilst highly photogenic, represented a stark lack of progression in storytelling, as well as marking the prologue of an all-too lengthy run of bad ideas which pulled the company away from its freshest golden age.
