9. Chris Benoit Vs. Triple H Vs. Shawn Michaels (2004)

From a technical standpoint, all boxes were ticked in this one. Chris Benoit was out to defend his status as the top baby face of early 2005, whilst Triple H and Shawn Michaels honourably continued their internal bickering. The chemistry between the three competitors was always going to make this a good match, and so fans were treated to a neat swill of technicality and honest brawling.

Ultimately, it was a slightly toned down version of the WrestleMania predecessor, but the audience were fully behind it, and the victory was as triumphant as we could ask for in a Backlash event.

There is of course a glaring reason why this isn't a watchable classic. A black cloud hangs over any match involving Chris Benoit, but this one is especially harrowing. In this particular event, the entire Benoit family can be seen watching in the front row. In hindsight of future events, the numerous shots of Chris Benoit's wife and two sons, as can still be viewed on the WWE network, render this whole episode too heartbreaking to enjoy to any full extent.
