When The Deadman met the Bizarre One for the Intercontinental Championship in a Casket Match, we should have expected an unusual encounter. And that’s exactly what we got. It’s hard to tell whether the presence of a golden casket added to the mystique or tarnished it altogether, but it was certainly a memorable sight.

The match was surprisingly entertaining, with Goldust holding his own throughout. Both men’s unique gimmicks matched unusually well, with each of them trying to play mind games with the other. But some of their in-ring work didn’t quite click and there were a few noticeable botches – especially when Goldust dropped to slap ‘Taker and The Deadman reacted when he hadn’t yet been hit. The match was also a little longer than it needed to be, but this was understandable as it was the main event.

It does, however, deserve points for being the first Casket Match to feature a surprise guest inside the casket, as Mankind appeared to cost ‘Taker the match. This tactic would later be used by the likes of Kane, Shawn Michaels, Bray Wyatt and The Undertaker himself.
