Sid had the strangest career in WWE. After two failed runs as a main-eventer, he returned in 1996, and was, for whatever reason, unbelievably over with the fans. Sid fed off this energy, and had what is probably his best run, spouting insane promos and dominating as a monster, eventually winning the championship from Shawn Michaels to a huge ovation at Madison Square Garden.

While he dropped it months later back to Shawn at the Royal Rumble, it was soon vacated, and Sid won it from Bret on RAW, carrying it all the way to WrestleMania 13, where he was defeated by The Undertaker.

Could Sid wrestle? No. Did that really matter? Not particularly. While Sid’s runs as world champion weren’t the longest, it was neat to see Vince’s fascination with big sweaty men actually yield an entertaining result for once. For a brief period in 1996, Sid was the man, and he deserved to be champ.
