It was 2010, and Batista was close to leaving WWE for an indefinite period, but not before undergoing an extremely bitter heel run with John Cena. Extreme Rules saw them go one on one in a Last Man Standing match, and it was by no means a half measure.

Whilst drawing from the more jittery and cowardly nuances of heelness didn't exactly become a man with the stature and physique of Batista, he did give it his all in this match. As did Cena. Both competitors' rise to main event status from their early days in OVW ran virtually parallel, so their chemistry and experience with each other made for some intuitive and beefy wrestling at this latter juncture in their careers.

The quantity of hard knocks in this match added sufficient bulk to the Last Man Standing format, and the hardcore elements made it right for the occasion. The victory was achieved by Cena gaffer-taping Batista's legs to the post, which was where The Animal remained, failing like an angry fish until the cameras cut. A bit of an undermining finish, but also sort of appropriate given the setting.
