23. JBL Vs. Kurt Angle - SmackDown 2005

SmackDown just love their Last Man Standing matches, don’t they?

This next one comes from the Jan 27, 2005 episode and saw JBL take on Kurt Angle, just three days before the two would compete in a Triple Threat match at the Royal Rumble (along with the Big Show).

Now, even though JBL was the WWE Champion, SmackDown GM Teddy Long hadn’t made this a title match. Of course, it would later be revealed that this whole showdown had been the Big Show’s idea, obviously with the intention of weakening his opponents ahead of the imminent Triple Threat.

And so we have on our hands another Last Man Standing match that was fittingly used to build a subsequent contest. Luckily, though, this one saved itself somewhat by being a decent match in itself, probably because it featured the ever-excellent Kurt Angle.

Not necessarily a classic, but a solid showing all the same.
