After the rooftop effort from 1995, the producers clearly realised
the error of their ways and ended up reverting back to the old theme song come
1996.
As well as being a much more fitting soundtrack for the show, they also introduced a new video package, which crucially was an improvement upon the earlier ’93 and ’94 renditions.
We saw loads more wrestlers being featured, and more importantly they were actually doing exciting things! We had Shawn Michaels jumping from a ladder, the British Bulldog cracking Ahmed Johnson with a steel chair and Mankind performing his patented elbow drop to the outside.
As well as showcasing the talent better, this was a great way to reflect the changing product in a period that would soon morph into the infamous Attitude Era.
The only slight blemish was the red spotlight that made each
clip look as though the flag of Japan had been somehow superimposed into the
background. I know Yokozuna was on top at the time, but I doubt that was quite
the effect they were looking for…
