Still in the middle of his first reign as U.S. Champion, Owens would soon trade the belt with his former best friend, Chris Jericho, eventually winning it back and nearly killing Jericho in the process.
A long and quite disappointing feud with AJ Styles would follow, with whom Owens also traded the belt a number of times.
First losing to 'The Phenomenal One' at a live event in MSG, Owens would then win it back in a really weird way at Battleground before losing it back to Styles in a Triple Threat Match that also featured the returning Y2J on an episode of SmackDown.
