Steve Austin and The Rock had done everything in a WWE ring by 2003, including facing each other at WrestleMania on two other occasions. Rolling into the 19th show, both men each had one thing left to do: Austin had to redeem himself after walking out on the company with one last match, and Rock had to beat Austin after losing to him at their previous two Mania encounters.

Their first match at Mania XV proved they had chemistry on a grand stage, their second was great, but their final bout against each other was the equivalent of a best-of album. Austin and Rock had fought so many times in the past, the fans knew what to expect from them and the two gave exactly what was promised.

To shake things up, an extra level of drama was added from the Rock. He had more to gain from this match as he'd never beaten Austin at WrestleMania. He pulled out stops that he hadn't tried previously, including stealing the Stunner. It took a People's Elbow and three Rock Bottoms to finally put down Stone Cold. Following that, the Texas Rattlesnake walked out of the ring, never to wrestle another match for the company.
