Fighting With My Family Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
4. The Strong Supporting Cast
Aiding Florence Pugh's fine effort is a distinguished cast far more talented than most would surely ever expect to appear in a movie based on the life of a WWE superstar.
In addition to Johnson's aforementioned portrayal, Jack Lowden is quite terrific as her brother Zak, selling the heartbreak of his humdrum life back in Norwich while Paige is busy getting to work in Florida.
Nick Frost and Lena Headey are also great fun as Paige's parents, diving fully into their roles and gamely selling their vulgarity with an unexpected enthusiasm.
The big surprise here, however, is Vince Vaughn, who as trainer Dutch gives one of his best performances of the last few years.
More than a mere hard-a** trainer, he brings a surprising amount of pathos to the film, especially during a sequence where he flatly tells Paige to hang it up and go home.
Few could've expected that Vince Vaughn's acting and Stephen Merchant's writing would be a snug fit, but alas, it's always fun to be surprised.
