A week after calling his shot to defend his NXT North American Championship in a ladder match, Carmelo Hayes got a bit more specific Tuesday night about the challenge.

Hayes, who successfully retained his title last week against Pete Dunne, said he wanted to defend the title at Stand and Deliver in the same kind of match where the first North American Champion was crowned (Adam Cole won it at TakeOver: New Orleans in 2018). He and Trick Williams determined that there should be four other challengers involved in the ladder match, with each man having to qualify.

NXT higher-ups must have agreed, because they announced the first qualifying match later on, with Cameron Grimes set to face Santos Escobar. Expect three more matches to be announced soon, as Stand and Deliver is less than four weeks away during WrestleMania 38 weekend.

Since its reboot last fall, NXT really has focused on being a developmental territory that teaches its young prospects about the fundamentals of sports entertainment, like taking a safe bump... off a ladder, or how to safely hit your opponent... with a chair. Seriously though, NXT 2.0 has been exceptionally plunder-heavy, including ladder matches, which seemed to happen every few weeks last fall.
