G1 Climax: Ranking The 9 Possible Finals
5. Hiroshi Tanahashi Vs. Kenny Omega
Kenny Omega and Hiroshi Tanahashi have rarely crossed paths over the years. Some of that just has to do with the different titles they've pursued, but a lot of it has to do with the matchup being protected and held off. In 2016, when Omega first moved up into the heavyweight division, his first major opponent was Tanahashi, as the two faced off for the vacant Intercontinental Champion. Thanks to the interfering Young Bucks, Omega was able to win the title and become a main event commodity from the jump, while Tanahashi went through a relative career downslope.
Since that time, Omega and Tanahashi have been kept apart, and both men have only improved since then. Omega is the worldbeating IWGP Champion, while Tanahashi is getting a career second-wind as he runs the table in the A Block.
Not only would a final between these two be huge in terms of star power, it would be the ultimate clash of philosophies. Omega has prided himself on pushing the boundaries of wrestling and creating controversy, while Tanahashi, the traditionalist, has decried Omega's type.
At some point, Tanahashi and Omega will have to meet at a big stage. For my money, this match is actually being held off for the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 13. If not, though, it would certainly be an excellent G1 final.
