How Vince McMahon Destroyed Typecasting In WWE

Braun Strowman Kevin Owens

In Roman Reigns, Vince McMahon sees Stone Cold Steve Austin the Attitude Era babyface and Alliance heel at the very same time. Seth Rollins is part-Cyril Sneer, part-Superman, all-unbuttered toast. The 'Monday Night Rollins' narrative has done a good job of beating audiences into submission with the view that long matches are good matches, but the former WWE Champion hasn't knocked out a run of contests as good since before he was the b*llocked offspring of Stephanie McMahon and Triple H in 2015. Dean Ambrose is neither a wacky neighbour from a sitcom nor frightening loner from a horror film, but 'The Luntatic Fringe' was pegged as a nailed-on topliner by Mick Foley, William Regal and others before he even made it to the main roster.

These are men McMahon once couldn't do without, but yet again the monumental paradigm shift has adjusted everything about how The Chairman's warped mind works.

Characters aren't reliable from week-to-week, and the bewildering behaviour isn't exclusive to babyfaces. Kevin Owens was brutalised over the summer by Braun Strowman, but helped him beatdown The Shield for reasons as-yet-unexplored. Less than a month later, he begged Strowman for mercy in a Mixed Match Challenge encounter by using this very rationale for reason. 'The Monster Among Men' paid it no heed and battered him yet again.

These are the days of big paydays and small mercies; neither of which particularly satisfy audiences. But then Vince can't even cast his the 'WWE Universe' correctly either...
